5 Reasons You Can’t Impress God to Try and Earn His Love

impress God

Since I grew up in church starting at a very young age; I should have understood that I can’t impress God. After all those Sunday school lessons and summer church camps I still never really understood who God was until I got older. Christians seem to complicate how to get closer to God. Many of them get wrapped up in religion instead of a personal relationship. They focus on the do’s and don’ts of how to try to impress God by being a good person and doing good deeds to earn his love.

I Can Impress God by Being a “Good” Girl

Growing up I heard a lot about “doing good deeds” and the phrase “be a good girl” was mentioned quite often. For decades I felt that I had to earn God’s love by being on my best behavior. It seems the more I tried to be “good” the worse I behaved. I tried to do everything right and many times it was an internal battle. I struggled as I tried to “be good” on my own and that isn’t what God wants for us.

He wants us to lean on him. He wants us to give our smallest concern to him and we definitely don’t have to play a game or try to be on our best behavior. He wants to have a real relationship with you just the way you are. He wants to be as close and even closer to you than you are to your spouse, best friend, or your parents.

Get Personal with God

Having a personal relationship doesn’t have anything to do with needing to impress God. It does have everything to do with understanding how God feels about you and what he wants for you.

There are five Bible verses that I feel if you knew, they would change your life like they did mine. Now I know that he doesn’t love me because of what I do or not do; he loves me because he is love.

Stop Trying to Impress God and Start Understanding His Character

Understanding what God will do for you and how he feels about you is truly this simple.

Bible Verse #1: He LOVES You

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

This is crazy love! This is the kind of love that we have a difficult time comprehending. Would you sacrifice your child for a bunch of sinners? I bet not as I wouldn’t either. But this is true. It is a level of love that we try to understand by comparing love we experience here on earth. That is where people go wrong. Nothing on earth will ever compare to God’s love.

God created you and loves you just the way you are. He isn’t surprised on how you turned out. He knows you better than you know yourself. So stop trying to earn his love and accept it. God gave you a gift so the only thing left for you is to believe him and accept it with open arms just as you do any other Christmas or birthday gift.

Bible Verse #2: He has PLANS for You

For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Don’t we dream about our kid’s future? We want them to have the best things in life so we help plan for college and spend years saving money so they can attend the college of their choice. We help them decide what they want to do for their career. We coach them on how to select the best type of people to hang out with or date. You plan for the ones you love. God is no different.

This promise from him is my favorite. Whenever I am unhappy about where I am in life, I always read this verse multiple times throughout the day. Even though I may be going through a hard time, he has plans to prosper me. It reminds me that good things are around the corner and that he hasn’t forgotten me.

Bible Verse #3: He FIGHTS for You

The LORD will fight for you: you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14 (NIV)

First, be still doesn’t mean sit on the couch eating a bag of mini Kit Kats (my favorite finger candy) and let God take care of everything. He is addressing the times in life when we worry or are anxious about something. He wants us to have a relaxed spirit at all times and understand that God will handle your problems.

Nothing is a surprise for God. He isn’t sitting in his recliner in heaven saying, “Oh no, I didn’t see that coming. What do I do now?” He already has a plan and already knew what was going to happen. So God is prepared and when you trust that he will take care of you then he will fight for you by getting you out of this situation.

Bible Verse #4: He REPAIRS Your Brokenness

“We know that God causes ALL things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

How cool is this? No matter if you made the mistake or if someone did you wrong, God uses ALL things for your good. When you love God, he will repair your situation or broken-heart. Have you ever heard anyone say to you, “It was the worst thing that ever happened to me, but also the best thing.”?

That is how God works. You may learn something from it, you may get pulled into a horrible situation in life but God turns it around and blesses you. I have shared my story multiple times about losing my job but it was more than that for me. I lost my identify as I was defined by my career. When I lost it, I was lost as a person. Even though I had to leave my friends in Denver of 10 years and my new condo, God took me to my favorite place in the world. I was living on the beach in Destin, Fl. He turned a horrible situation into a blessing that I will forever be grateful for.

Bible Verse #5: He WINS for You

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Who likes hanging out with winners? Duh, we all do. As a Christian we have read the end of the book, so we know that God wins. We needs to live life like winners and not walk around with our problems weighing us down. Yes, it can be difficult, but our life on earth is a short amount of time until we live in eternity in the after life. You will have problems every day of your life, but trust God and he will always take care of you.
